MLAs refused bail

In a landmark decision, the Guwahati High Court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of two MLAs, Jitin Gogoi and Kushal Duorii who were arrested for going on a rampage inside the Kaziranga National Park on March 17, 2009 (Sanctuary Vol. XXIX No. 2, April 2009).

The duo had entered the park to fish in the Kohora range, and when stopped by the Range Officer Dharani Dhar Boro, they proceeded to assault him and ransack park property. The FIR filed with the Kohora police station saw little action being taken against the MLAs. Furious forest officials and the All Assam Ranger’s Association subsequently went on a strike refusing to resume work until the MLAs were arrested. Gogoi alleges that he is being falsely accused and insists that Boro quarreled with him when he inquired about the whereabouts of a stash of confiscated rhino horns.
