Okhla under threat

Concerned citizens have filed a petition with the Supreme Court appointed Central Empowered Committee against the construction project adjacent to the Okhla Bird Sanctuary.

The project proponent is none other than the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government through the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA). The project has been embarked on without an Environment Impact Assessment being carried out as required by the Environment Protection Act. This is an Important Bird Area and almost 400 species have been recorded in this small sanctuary. During the migratory season, up to 25,000 birds can be seen here. Little information is available regarding the construction project though it is estimated to cost between Rs. 82 to 300 crores.
