Churches to ask for a strong climate deal on December 13
November 12, 2009: The World Council of Churches has directed its churches around the world to ring their bells 350 on December 13 to coincide with the climate negotiations being held in Copenhagen, Denmark from December 7 – 18, 2009.
The action is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. local time in each area and is bound to create an impact as the WCC brings together 348 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican churches representing about 560 million Christians in 110 countries.
The number of chimes – 350 – is also symbolic as 350 ppm represents the safe limit of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We are currently at 387 ppm.
