Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Annamalai Hills, south of the Palghat Gap in Western Ghats. The 285 sq km stretch of thick forest has several rivers such as Parambikulam, Sholayar and Thekkedy and thick forest of bamboo, sandalwood, rosewood and teak (famous Kannimari teak - largest in Asia). Fauna includes tiger, leopard, wild dog, sloth bear, elephant, wild boar, barking deer, spotted deer, langur and macaque. Parambikulam is also home to Kerala’s largest population of gaur. Besides these, civet, mouse deer, pangolin, crocodile, jungle cat, porcupine and some 140 species of birds are found in the sanctuary.
