Sanctuary Monsoon Nature Trail At Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Sanctuary Asia would like to invite subscribers and their families for a nature trail led by the Sanctuary team in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) on Sunday, September 7, 2014. We will spend a couple of hours in the forest, which will be at its most vibrant during the monsoon season.

Please indicate the number of people in your group, the ages of any accompanying children, and whether you will bring your own vehicle for transport within the park. Registration is mandatory and closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 5, or when slots fill up, whichever is earlier.

About the event:

After paying your entrance fees (Rs. 33/person) at the ticket counter, meet the Sanctuary group on the left, just inside the park (near the park map). Once inside, you will be required to pay the Nature Information Centre (Forest Department) fees (Rs. 75/person) after which there will be no other payment required. There may not be reliable cellphone coverage once we’re inside the park, so we urge everyone to be on time; if you miss the group, it will be tough to find us.

Attire and what to carry: Please wear earth-coloured (green, brown, grey) clothes, comfortable and loose clothes. Bring a cap/hat and raingear, wear trekking /sports shoes. You may want to carry a spare set of clothes for children in case they get wet in the stream. Don't forget to carry water/fruit juices and a snack.

This event is exclusively for Sanctuary Asia and Cub subscribers. Please register before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2014. Not a subscriber yet, or have a subscription that has lapsed? About the Organisers/Partners:

Sanctuary Asia: Sanctuary is an organisation that communicates the rationale for wilderness conservation and environmental protection, particularly in an era of climate change. We are at the fulcrum of several wildlife conservation campaigns and serve as a network for wildlife groups, concerned individuals and non-profit organisations.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park: In the heart of metropolitan Mumbai exists one of the most unique forests in the world, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). At just over 103 sq. km in size, this city forest could fit New York’s Central Park 30 times over within its boundaries. There are more butterfly species (150) in this 103 sq. km. wilderness than exist in all of the United Kingdom! There are 40 species of mammals including free-ranging leopards, 296 bird species, 1,000 plus flowering plant species and a 2,000-year-old cave system located inside this park. This is the teak-dominated, moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forest that we want you to visit with us. Ten minutes from the entrance gate you will not even believe you are in Mumbai!

Sanctuary nature trails are always excellent learning experiences. Amid diverse flora and fauna and in company of eminent naturalists and experts, this experience is hard to beat.

Thanks Gaurav. Folks I shall be there with the group and so let's have fun looking at the myriad monsoon flora and other wonders of the animal kingdom, like the insects, spiders and so many other lesser known forms, which MOST city-dwellers and MAMMAL-watcher nature lovers are oblivious to.

I've been to the SGNP so many times but I've never had as good a time as when I'm with the Sanctuary group. The naturalists are wonderful and everyone feels like part of one big family! I hope lots more people join us this time!

This is where it begin...i remember as a college student going out for Monsoon nature trail with Dr. Parvish Pandya. It never left me, every visit is a new experience. Sheer joy of visiting the forest, listing to the birds, watching as the nature machinery works..continuously. Its more then a forest....it the lifeline.
