| Wildlife Parade | | | 7th Dec 2007, National Centre for Performing Arts, Mumbai. | | | In the spirit of wildlife conservation, ‘Kids for Tigers’, the Complan-presented Sanctuary Tiger Programme, is organising a 'Wildlife Parade', at Marine Drive in Mumbai on 7 December 2007 at 10.00 am. | | | The purpose of the parade is to educate adults about their responsibility towards nature and wildlife.
This Parade is the first step towards protecting what rightfully belongs to every Mumbaikar - The Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). SGNP, a lovely 103 sq. km. natural forest and the green lung of Mumbai, is rapidly disappearing due to encroachment and other man-caused disturbances. It provides Mumbai with drinking water and therefore, is vital to the existence of Mumbai city. Apart from this, it helps regulate the climate of Mumbai by absorbing excess carbon dioxide. SGNP is also the birth place of the Mithi River, which is responsible for draining flood waters into the Arabian Sea, thereby reducing the effect of floods during monsoon. However, indiscriminate pollution, encroachment, illegal constructions and dumping of plastic has choked this river, constricting its flow and increasing the chances of severe floods, such as the one experienced on July 26, 2005.
Through this parade, children will get an opportunity to 'call out to the adults' and urge them to protect the 'natural' foundation of Mumbai city. Students from Jamnabai Narsee School, Cathedral and John Conon School, Udayachal School, Gopi Birla Memorial School, Saifi Girls, Sri M. M. Pupils School, Palm Beach School, New Era Primary School, Ulhasnagar among others, will be seen calling out to Mumbaikars to generate awareness and a sense of action with the help of colourful and thought provoking placards, banners and slogans.

| Quo Vadis, India? A 90-minute climate change exploration. | | | 22nd Aug 2007, National Centre for Performing Arts, Mumbai. | | | Sanctuary is organising a climate change exploration on August 22, 2007 at the NCPA. The purpose is to raise the level of awareness and understanding about climate change, specifically with reference to India and to stimulate a purposeful and sensible national response. | | This is not an 'environmental event', rather it is one that cuts across sectors of energy, food and water security, ecological security and, therefore, the financial, indeed the internal security of India. Apart from climate change experts, individuals such as Vikram Mehta, Chairman, Shell Petroleum and Sajjan Jindal, ViceChairman and Managing Director of JSW Steel Ltd. will also be addressing the audience, as will Naina Lal Kidwai, CEO, HSBC.
The event is expected to attract an audience of over 1,000 people. It will involve a short but lively interactive session between the panel and the audience. Though media is playing a strong role in exposing corruption...this needs to be corroborated by struggles against systemic institutionalised corruption. | | The struggle against the Sardar Sarovar and other dams in the Narmada valley now represents much more than opposition to large dams. It has raised questions on environmental sustainability, cost benefit analysis, displacement and of course the rationale of the development process, which brings benefit to some while displacing and dispossessing others and in our case, tribals and dalits. The complete lack of accountability can be seen in the Bargi dam where even after more than a decade after the building of the dam wall, irrigation canals are not built and the dam submerges more land than it irrigates.
The corruption associated with large projects is one major reason for which they are preferred over environmentally sustainable small-scale alternatives, which displace fewer people.
Money rarely ever reaches the purpose it was meant for.
The fight against corruption has been one of the major pillars of Indian democracy. The emergence of a strong visual media has begun to expose corruption in high places but this needs to be corroborated by struggles against systemic institutionalised corruption.

past two decades and stengthen the ongoing struggle. | | The two decades of struggle, with mass actions, challenged and exposed the designs of the governments and the World Bank. The struggle also witnessed state repression, illegality and inhumanity of forceful eviction of living communities, severe environmental destruction and the falsehood in the overestimated benefits.
NBA has, tried to bring to the attention of the civil society as well as the planners, the unjustifiability of large dams and the need for decentralised, non-destructive management of land, water, and forest.
Today, even when the construction of the Sardar Sarovar has stopped (and so are the big dams in the Valley, Narmada Sagar, Maheshwar, Goi, Veda) the sword is still hanging… other large dams and the interlinking of rivers is pushed ahead…the World Bank and other players are privatising and looting our water resources. The water policy and the national rehabilitation policy is still to be radically transformed as per our vision of equity, justice, sustainability, and self-reliance. The challenge is on and so is the struggle.
The reconstruction — through Jeevanshalas (the life-schools), the micro-hydel project, the training and action related to health, water projects, PDS, EGS and Panchayat Raj — too is on! NBA continues to be active in alliance building of peoples’ movements challenging globalisation and liberalisation, Enron and Coca Cola, and contribute to policy making — national and international, like the World Commission on Dams, to the extent possible. This is time to not just rejoice over and celebrate our humble attainment but also to reflect and to review.
We invite you to the Narmada Valley for a series of programmes to commemorate the past two decades.
