In the U.S. election on November 4, 2008, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama became President-Elect of the United States, beating Senator John McCain by healthy margins with many demographic groups of America’s voting public. Obama is the first African-American to be elected President of the U.S.
Throughout his campaign, Senator Obama promised to pursue American energy independence, and to correct the country’s course regarding climate change, both at home and abroad. The President-Elect, who will take the oath of office on January 20, 2009, replacing George W. Bush, is widely expected to reverse many of the Bush administration’s environmental and energy initiatives, and to exercise global leadership on climate change in particular.
