SANDESH KADUR – ‘Speeding Deer’

‘Speeding Deer’ This photo of a barasingha stag taken in the Kanha National Park perfectly captures the majesty of one of India’s most endangered deer. The photographer panned the camera to follow the movement of his subject to produce this evocative image. Also known as the swamp deer, this herbivore is best characterised by its antlers, which have between 10 and 14 tines, though mature males have been recorded with as many as 20. In fact, the name barasingha is derived from the Hindi word for twelve horns. The species is now extinct in Pakistan and Bangladesh and survives in isolated pockets in northern and central India, and southwestern Nepal.
