DHRITIMAN MUKHERJEE – ‘Up-Close Avian’

‘Up-Close Avian’ The Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo is usually found in Central Eurasia, but birds from Mongolia and China will often spend the winter on the Indian subcontinent. A migratory waterbird, it occupies a variety of habitats, including deserts and arid grasslands, in places such as Khichan in Rajasthan, where this image was taken. The handsome birds will generally remain localised a few hundred metres from streams or lakes. Locally called koonj, the birds are part of the culture of North India and Pakistan. Villagers in Khichan feed the cranes and protect them when they arrive after their arduous annual migration. Large congregations of the species here have become an annual spectacle.
