Periyar Inheritance

Indian Hump-nosed Pit Viper by Sachin Rai

Tropical moist deciduous and evergreen forests are amongst the most herpetofauna-rich habitats on the planet. Not surprisingly, in Periyar, almost 45 species of reptiles, including 32 species of snakes and 27 amphibian species (understudied) have been listed. Scientists and experts believe that if systematic assessments are made, Periyar’s river systems and valleys could see the current count rise by another 35 or 40 species at the very least. The Indian hump-nosed pit vipers Hypnale hypnale are common in Periyar.
