Periyar Inheritance

Common Indian Toad by Anish Andheria

Tropical moist deciduous and evergreen forests are amongst the most herpetofauna-rich habitats on the planet. Not surprisingly, in Periyar, almost 45 species of reptiles, including 32 species of snakes and 27 amphibian species (understudied) have been listed. Scientists and experts believe that if systematic assessments are made, Periyar’s river systems and valleys could see the current count rise by another 35 or 40 species at the very least. The common Indian toads Duttaphrynus melanostictus are common in Periyar.
