In Periyar’s diverse forest types – montane grasslands, moist deciduous and evergreen forests and wetlands – you have a chance of seeing all of the Western Ghats’ 19 endemic birds  (if you knew where to look). The diminutive, yet beautiful Black-and-orange Flycatcher Ficedula nigrorufa sometimes associates as part of a mixed hunting flock of birds that pass through the middle canopy and undergrowth seeking out arboreal insects.
