Siberian Cranes pull out grass with their soft, red beaks, then dig below the soil surface to a depth of three to four centimetres to reach tubers and rhizomes. The food is splashed in the water to clear away mud and dirt. Concerned by the plummeting numbers of wintering Siberian Cranes in India, the International Crane Foundation and the Government of India worked to re-establish a population through restocking of captive-bred Siberian Cranes. But the effort failed.
