Kaziranga Inheritance

Greater Adjutant by Bernard Castelein

The Greater Adjutant Leptoptilos dubius is a globally-threatened species that is relatively secure in Assam. Its bald, pink head and massive beak give it a characteristic ‘haggard’ look. The birds are in decline because they are losing nesting and feeding grounds to humans, and also because they are susceptible to the toxic contamination of wetlands and the bioaccumulation of poisons from the bodies of the animals they eat. Protected Areas like Kaziranga might be the last hope for such precariously-placed species.
