Indian Crested Porcupine by Anand Nambiar
An Indian crested porcupine Hystrix indica walks nonchalantly along a dirt track of the Corbett Tiger Reserve in broad daylight. Its quills keep it relatively safe from most predators. Porcupines are largely nocturnal and have adapted to different habitats across the Indian subcontinent. However, this particular individual learned how to exploit the food source discarded by irresponsible tourists in the residential complex at Dhikala. This endangers its life as plastic bags could cause intestinal blockage and some foods that humans consume are toxic to wild animals.
