Short-toed Eagle by Clement Francis

Predators are almost invariably stronger, or faster, or smarter than their quarry. But in this case a Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus in the Maidanehalli Wildlife Sanctuary near Bengaluru, found the tables turned. A miscalculation enabled this rat snake Ptyas mucosus to exercise a vice-like grip around its tormentor’s neck and wings. Fortunately for both predator and prey, the snake managed to maneuver the bird towards a burrow, whereupon it released its hold to make good its escape, leaving behind a most surprised and lucky to be alive eagle.
