Sloth Bear by Sandeep Desai

A sloth bear mother hovers protectively over her curious cubs in the famed Daroji Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka. Sloth bears Melursus ursinus are victims of ruthless poaching gangs that kill mother bears and then kidnap cubs for sale to madharis who make them dance for a living on city streets. It hardly helps that a thriving and widespread trade in bear bile acts as an added incentive to kill bears. And then we have the usual problem of habitat loss and revenge killings when bears raid crops or maul people who intrude into their vanishing forests. One of the by-products of offering protection to larger mega fauna such tigers and elephants is the protection that is received by lesser-known but equally vital creatures such as bears, which too are headed firmly towards extinction
