Yellow-bellied Weasel by Sachin Rai
Possibly the first coloured photograph of the yellow-bellied weasel Mustela kathiah, shot on a road in the Mishmi hills of Arunachal Pradesh. Rarely seen, this secretive creature was drawn to a roadkill comprising a large species of rat. According to the photographer, the weasel was extremely apprehensive of breaking out of its cover, but eventually gave in to its digestive juices. It is not surprising that in the ‘old days’ weasels were kept as pets by tribal families to keep a check on rodent populations.
