Black Kites by A. Christy Williams
Food has and will always remain a key factor in inter and intra-species survival. This mid-air ballet involving two Black Kites Milvus migrans took place above Guwahati’s Deepor Beel, one of Assam’s many floodplains’ wetlands. Just as one kite succeeded in snatching a snake from the water, a second opportunistic competitor dive-bombed the former, resulting in a lucky escape for the snake. The sheer drama of this image showcases both skill and timing. More than the birds, it’s the snake’s great (and lucky) escape that persuaded the judges to name field biologist A. Christy Williams, the Sanctuary-RBS Wildlife Photographer of the Year for 2009.
