The Chambal river was a stronghold for the fish-eating gharial Gavialis gangeticus until recently when 100 individuals were found dead under mysterious circumstances. Scientists suggest that a combination of toxic contamination in the Yamuna, of which the Chambal is a tributary, together with an impaired immune system, may have contributed to the tragic deaths.
