Ant and Aphids by P. Karunakaran
The ability of one species to harvest another is not restricted to humans. Ants (Order Hymenoptera) have been harvesting aphids (Order Hemiptera) for millions of years, behaviour that can correctly be termed as ‘herding’. The ants that corral the aphids receive a constant supply of sugar-rich fluids from their captives and the aphids benefit from the ants’ protection.
