Sea Cucumber by Deepak Apte

Sea cucumbers are related to starfish. Unlike starfish, however, they have elongated bodies and an almost leathery skin. Widely distributed and commonly seen, this amazing image is probably a first for India. Here, a sea cucumber is seen raising itself above the sea bed to scatter sperm just four metres below the surface of the sea in Lakshadweep. The natural history value and rarity of the image won it a joint third place in the contest.
