Stray dogs and Sambar by Nikhil Devasar

These are stray dogs, not wild ones. They have nevertheless formed a pack to attack this wild nilgai. The proliferation of feral dogs in our wilderness areas is a major problem. The dogs breed on organic garbage dumped indiscriminately by careless human settlements in and around Protected Areas. Dogs in places as far removed from each other as the Nicobar Islands and Ladakh now take a major toll on wildlife. They actually compete in some places with wild predators. This extraordinary photograph was shot in the Sultanpur Wildlife Sanctuary near New Delhi. Such animals also spread rabies, canine distemper and anthrax.
