Elephant by Jagdeep Rajput

Like a living fortress of legs, adult elephants protect a calf. Care of calves is central to the success of the species and mothers and ‘aunts’ in the herd will share this responsibility. Close social contact and the strong relationship between elephants reflects the kind of caring humans once believed was exclusive to Homo sapiens. With their long memories and emotional response to stress, elephants suffer terribly when a close family member is killed by poachers, or by wildlife managers who kill elephants to solve human-animal conflicts.
