Himalayan Marmot by Clement Francis

Himalayan marmots, Marmota himalayana often indulge in such tests of strength, which determine their social hierarchy, decide mating priorities and demarcate territories. These are believed to be among the highest living mammals in the world and occupy habitats above the tree-line. They live in large colonies, excavating deep burrows in which they hibernate when winter snows cloak the ground. In summer, they feed outside and emit loud whistles on sighting predators including snow leopards, foxes and eagles.
