Red Weaver Ant by N. V. Krishnan

These small red weaver ants Oecophylla smaragdine photographed in the Western Ghats, Kerala have been captured on film carrying a grub that is 300 times their own size. The small size of the ants’ bodies ensure that they do not have to carry ‘their own’ extra weight as they are designed to have proportionately more muscle (per cross-sectional area) than most other creatures. This is what enables them to perform such ‘weightlifter’ feats.
