FIRST PRIZE: LALITH EKANAYAKE – Nature in the Raw

FIRST PRIZE: LALITH EKANAYAKE – In a spasm of pure energy, a mugger crocodile Crocodylus palustris rips the skin off a hapless spotted deer or chital Axis axis in a single stroke at the Yala National Park in Sri Lanka. By some accounts these water courses harbour the largest concentration of muggers in the world, possibly around 500 in an area of 140 sq. km. The judges unanimously chose the image for the sheer power of this action-stopping, natural history moment, which saw Lalith Ekanayake nominated as the Sanctuary Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2013. Ekanayake, who has photographed wildlife around the world says, “Yala is my favourite place and I have grown to expect the unexpected in this amazing wildlife park.”
