SECOND PRIZE: GIRI CAVALE – Mating Moves!
SECOND PRIZE: GIRI CAVALE – This image of two mating leopards Panthera pardus virtually selected itself for the playful interaction and unique, athletic moment captured. The photographer observed this pair over two days in August 2013. Normally solitary, a mating pair may spend time together for some days. Kabini, a part of Karnataka’s Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, is fast gaining a reputation for being one of the finest reserves to observe and photograph leopards during the day. The photographer used a Nikon D4, with a Nikkor 500 mm lens. When a female is in oestrus, she ‘advertises’ the fact through scent signals in her urine and she will mark her territory more frequently to attract the dominant male in the area.
