SPECIAL MENTION: BIJU BORO – Charging ahead
SPECIAL MENTION: BIJU BORO – Two Asiatic wild buffalos, Bubalus arnee, charge through flood waters in the incredible Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, some 55 km. from Guwahati, Assam, on June 28, 2012. As much as 90 per cent of the sanctuary area was submerged forcing rhinos and other wild animals to shelter in the woodland of the park, which is located at a higher altitude. Boro informed Sanctuary that: “With some guards I had gone to the forest in a country boat to survey the grim scenario caused by the floods. The buffalos were headed straight for our boat and only some very quick reaction from the guards who sounded vocal alarms, diverted the huge animals from our boats at the very last moment.” Asiatic buffaloes are bovines that are found in Southeast Asia and have been listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List since 1986. Genetic swamping caused by interbreeding with feral and domestic buffaloes poses a major threat to the species.
