The Tadoba Inheritance Contest Winners

An Unusual Scavenger

Special Mention: Atul Dhamankar

The photographer saw a pack of dholes kill a male chital one morning near the Pandherpauni grassland next to the road. After eating half of the kill, they left, but the photographer was sure that more action would follow and returned in the afternoon. Truly enough, says Dhamankar, “When I went back, I saw that the dholes had moved the carcass to a clump of bamboos, but were missing from the site. Instead, an unusual scavenger – a ruddy mongoose – was feeding on the carcass. This was the first time I saw a mongoose eating carrion in Tadoba.”
