A Quick Escape

Special Mention: Harshal Kishor Malvankar

Tigers usually hunt alone, using stealth to ambush their prey, surprising them and knocking them off balance. The photographer saw a pair of wild pigs enjoying a peaceful day at the Pandherpauni waterhole. Suddenly, he saw the head of tiger cub and noticed that it was quietly swimming ahead. In Malvankar’s words: “Our excitement knew no bounds when we saw a herd of chital and sambar deer approach the waterhole. The wild pigs were still unaware of the cub’s approach. The cub was hardly four metres away from the herd and we were sure that it would make a successful kill. However, another tiger cub showed up at the last moment and that was enough for the herd to scamper away.”
