Dragonflies Mating By Narinder S. Narang
Seen here are dragonflies in a characteristic ‘mating wheel’ formation. Courtship among these insects is seemingly quite unromantic, appearing to be more a capture-for-food tactic. The pair flies in a ‘mating- chain’, in tandem, with the male in front, occasionally coming to rest on vegetation before starting up again. After some time the ‘chain’ becomes a ‘wheel’, ending in copulation and egg-laying.
