Sanctuary Wildlife Photography Awards 2016
Joint Third Prize: Ripan Biswas
A Peculiar Piscator: In a seasonal swamp in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district, Ripan Biswas documents a spectacular natural history moment. Firmly anchored to the vegetation, a gorgeous fishing spider of the Thalassius sp. reels in its catch. The plant supports the spider that holds the fish that kisses the water – a perfect depiction of just one of the infinite links between terra firma and aquaterra. It took Biswas an entire year after first chancing upon a spider eating a fish in this swamp to find and document this sight. Other than the fact that it is an uncommon record, our judges found so many commendable aspects to this image, including the precision of focus and the attention to detail.
