Contributor's Guidelines

Sanctuary reaches a wide and varied audience including conservationists, biologists, wildlife officials/professionals, but the majority of our readership comprises educated thinking and empowered individuals with the urge to know more about our wildlife and environment.

Kinds of articles published: For us to consider an article, the subject would need to be well researched, compelling and interesting. The thrust should be on natural history/conservation, environmental and wildlife issues. If the piece is about a particular destination, it should elaborate on the ecology, flora and fauna of the region, threats to the habitat, and should also include personal experiences. We also encourage wildlife profiles, species status reports, personal adventure in national parks, people's relationships with the land etc. Most of our articles are written in a first person narrative, reader-friendly style. We appreciate creative thinking and would like the story to bring about awareness and educate readers without preaching.

Photographs: Articles must be supported by superlative colour or black and white images. We prefer to receive professional quality colour transparencies, but excellent, enlarged prints are also acceptable.

Length: Most major features run around 2,000 words, although we do carry smaller reports of about 1,000 words.

Submission Procedure: Please send us a synopsis (one single line spaced page) to indicate precisely what you have in mind and enclose some visual support and any concise background information. The synopsis should clearly outline what the main article will cover. You should also include a brief backgrounder about yourself. After receiving the synopsis, we may ask for a copy of the manuscript. This does not, however, mean that the manuscript has been accepted and you will receive a confirmation of publication from our editorial team only after we have received the complete article. Please note that it can take between six months to a year for material to be published after acceptance.

Editing: This is at the discretion of the editor of the magazine. Some stories require very little editing; others may be edited heavily in keeping with the Sanctuary style. A copy of the edited story goes to the writer for comment prior to publication.

We strongly encourage you to study the last few issues of our publication to get a better idea of the kind of articles we publish, and topics that have been covered recently.
