Where is the money?

Money released by the Ministry of Environment and Forests for anti-poaching operations in the Manas Tiger Reserve is yet to reach park officials.

The first installment of Rs. 43.70 lakh meant for deployment of personnel, buying petrol and other wildlife conservation efforts was sent to the state government headquarters in Dispur in October 2008 but remains unutilised. Last year, the World Heritage Committee Mission had also expressed its reservations about the future of the park due to the non-release of funds. This also jeopardises the release of the second installment as well, as the latter is issued only after the submission of the utilisation certificates for the first one.
