E-waste dump site in Roorkie
October 2009: Overriding serious environmental concerns, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has given M/s Attero Pvt. Ltd., a recycling plant based in Roorkie, permission to import 8,000 MT of e-waste from U.K. and U.S.A.
Methods used in recycling nationally generated e-waste are already dubious and the clearance will encourage new recyclers to set shop in India and get import permissions. Environmentalists suggest that large amounts of e-waste are also illegally imported through India’s postal system. The interest in international e-waste lies in the fact that they often contain precious metals such as gold, copper and palladium. What is largely ignored is that they also contain highly toxic materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury, beryllium, BFRs, PVC and phosphorus compounds.
