There will be books on Himalayan regions such as Kashmir, Tibet and Sikkim. There will also be books on British Raj and those on princely states. One of the star attractions will be lithographs from John Gould`s books such as “Birds of Asia”, James Forbes’ book “Oriental Memoirs” written in 1813, “Oriental Field Sports” (two volumes) by Thomas Williamson (1808), “Game Birds of India” by Allen Hume and Marshall (volumes 1-3 written during 1873-99). The books are from BNHS Library and also from private collections.
Rare photos and paintings from these books take the reader on a nostalgic and joyful trip to the peaceful by-gone eras where the pace of life was slow and there was abundance of nature all around. Some of the photos in these books depict Mumbai city of the 19th century, the attire of the people of those times, the occupation of people, the wildlife of those times and the monuments that still stand today in all their glory. One interesting painting is that of a family of tigers resting on a railway line, even as an inspection officer is approaching in a cart mounted on rails and pushed by two helpers.
