The forests of Melghat are vital to the Vidarbha region because this drought-prone area receives more than 40 per cent of its water supply from the tiger reserve, mainly from rivers such as the Sipna, seen in this picture, and others that eventually flow into the famous Tapti river. These rivers are a lifeline for herbivores upon which carnivores depend.
