Sanctuary Asia's Wild Maharashtra
SPECIAL MENTION, JAYESH JOSHI
The critically-endangered Forest Owlet, once considered extinct, is seen here with a Yellow-crowned Woodpecker, an endemic bird found only in the Indian subcontinent. The loss of forest cover in the plains has now largely confined this endemic bird to sub-optimal habitats. The potential of birds to attract sensitive visitors is immense. By some estimates birdwatchers outnumber tiger-watchers many times over.
