Sundarbans Inheritance

Horseshoe Crab by Dr. Helmut Denzau

The Sundarbans swamps support an amazing diversity of ‘lesser’ life forms such as these mating horseshoe crabs Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda and pythons Python molurus. The diversity springs from the fact that the mangrove ecosystem straddles contrasting influences – nutrient-rich ocean tides from the Bay of Bengal and fresh water inflows from the north. The salinity on the Bangladesh side of the Sundarbans is lower than the Indian side and this result in a subtly different composition of plant and animal life.
