Grey Heron by Saleel Tambe
Grey Herons Ardea cinerea hunt by sight, using stealth more than pure speed to overcome their prey. This coot chick Fulica atra was probably snapped up using the typical single-strike strategy involving the launching of its beak and neck at its victim. Primarily fish eaters, they will, however, take what they can overpower. They tend to locate prey by moving their feet about underwater, keeping their bills perfectly still and horizontal, and waiting patiently for their target to move into range to allow a single bill strike.
