Shrub Frog by Abhishek Jain
This extraordinary image reveals three developing embryos of a shrub frog Raorchestes sp. engulfed inside gelatinous globules that not only protect the embryo from parasites but maintain the 100 per cent humidity levels without which the new life would die. The bright yellow mass visible so clearly is the egg yolk, which feeds the embryo in the egg stage and, amazingly, also feeds the tadpole for the first few days after it emerges. Shot in the moist evergreen forests of Wynaad, Kerala, such sights are seldom seen by decision makers in whose hands the fate of our fragile forests rests.
