Bat by H. P Ashvin and Vijay Mohan Raj
A fulvous fruit bat Rousettus leschenaultii mother takes to wing, with its young one clinging tightly to its underbelly. The evolution of a thin membrane known as ‘patagium’ extending from the body and hind feet to the forearm, between the digits of the hand, enabled bats to do what no other mammal can – fly. This success has led to the existence of nearly 1,000 species of bats, representing 20 per cent of all mammals found on Earth.
