SPECIAL MENTION: A. CHRISTY WILLIAMS – This unusual image of a smooth-coated otter Lutrogale perspicillata bounding across the Ramganga river in the Corbett Tiger Reserve speaks volumes for the diversity of these glacial-water-fed forests. The quick-swimming mustelids are excellent hunters and though fish make up over 90 per cent of their diet, they will also take what other prey they can including ground birds. The photographer watched the otters swim, run, jump and dive after the fish until they successfully landed their quarry. All three species of otters found in India – the smooth-coated, Eurasian and the Oriental small-clawed – are poached for the value of their pelts and are also endangered because their aquatic habitats are being degraded.
