Sanctuary Wildlife Photography Awards 2013

SPECIAL MENTION: ARUN BAWEJA – The eyes of this jackal Canis aureus, capturing an unusual natural history moment by an artful predator, won this image a special mention from the judges. The Corbett Tiger Reserve has drama for the asking around virtually every bend. Camp followers of larger predators whose kills they often steal, jackals are nevertheless canny carnivores, capable of killing chital Axis axis fawns, though they really sustain themselves with much smaller prey including rodents, ground birds, frogs, reptiles and even insects and seasonal fruits. In Baweja’s words: “Nature can be quite surprising. As I took this image in Khinnanauli, I saw that following the jackal was a large herd of deer!”
