Rush Hour: Every winter, thousands of Demoiselle Cranes Grus virgo arrive in the village of Khichan, Rajasthan, in one of India’s most underrated migration spectacles. Here, they spend the cold months replenishing their exhausted bodies after the gruelling flight from their breeding grounds in Eurasia. Locally known as koonj, the same word is used to describe pretty belles in the village, those as graceful as these cranes, as well as those who undertake hazardous journeys, just as the cranes do.
