Jairam favours Finnish technology for Jaitapur nuclear plant - Economic Times: articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com
NEW DELHI: With continued public concern over safety of nuclear power and the use of Areva's "untested" technology in the Jaitapur nuclear power park, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh is looking... etc. etc. etc.
I like Jairam. But the truth is he could opt for nuclear technology from the green men on Mars if he wished to. He would still not be able to show India a way to deal with radiation, the fire that cannot be put out. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has not yet made public the information that lies hidden somewhere in its dank files: "Just how many people does Mumbai's Tarapur Power Station anticipate would need to be evacuated in the event of a meltdown?" The trouble with our politicians is that they have grand plans, with ABSOLUTELY no intention of paying for the quagmire into which they so readily and so regularly place the victims of their misadventures (that's the rest of us!).
That apart, nuclear energy, which is touted as a solution to non-carbon energy is no such thing because in the process of building a new reactor, putting in the back up systems and then catering to the lifelong care of the toxic, irradiated waste, more carbon is put into the atmosphere than can possibly be saved through the lifetime operation of the plant. Clearly no lessons have been learned from the tragedy of Fukushima.
Bottom line? There is no such thing as peaceful nuclear energy. Every single reactor is a potential Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Chernobyl... or Fukushima. And these tombs of perpetual death will stay that way for millions of years, probably longer than it took for us to graduate from Pan troglodyte ( or some such!) to Homo sapiens!
